Long-term global motion estimation and its application for sprite coding, content description, and segmentation

چکیده
In this paper, we present a new technique for longterm global motion estimation of image objects. The estimated motion parameters describe the continuous and time-consistent motion over the whole sequence relatively to a fixed reference coordinate system. The proposed method is suitable for the estimation of affine motion parameters as well as for higher order motion models like the parabolic model—combining the advantages of feature matching and optical flow techniques. A hierarchical strategy is applied for the estimation, first translation, affine motion, and finally higher order motion parameters, which is robust and computationally efficient. A closed-loop prediction scheme is applied to avoid the problem of error accumulation in long-term motion estimation. The presented results indicate that the proposed technique is a very accurate and robust approach for long-term global motion estimation, which can be used for applications such as MPEG-4 sprite coding or MPEG-7 motion description. We also show that the efficiency of global motion estimation can be significantly increased if a higher order motion model is applied, and we present a new sprite coding scheme for on-line applications. We further demonstrate that the proposed estimator serves as a powerful tool for segmentation of video sequences.

Sprite generation for frame-based video coding
Sprite coding is a very efficient method for the representation and compression of background video object, which has been accepted by MPEG-4 standard. However, how to automatically generate sprite image from raw video sequence is still an open issue, because the motion of foreground video objects not only disturbs the accuracy of motion estimation but also blurs the generated sprite image. Thi...

The video coding standard MPEG-4 is enabling content-based functionalities of a prior decomposition of sequences into video object planes (VOP) so that each VOP represents a semantic object. Therefore extraction of semantic objects is an important part. There are various coding tools: shape coding, motion estimation and compensation, texture coding, multifunctional coding, error resilience, spr...

متن کاملA robust global motion estimation scheme for sprite coding
A new global motion estimation technique for sprite coding is presented in this paper. The proposed system manages to accurately register frames to a sprite without referencing the sprite. This allows motion estimation process to be performed in an environment free from the adverse influence of the sprite which is usually blurred by the erroneous motion estimation. Furthermore, our proposed sys...
متن کاملFast and Robust Sprite Generation for MPEG-4 Video Coding
This paper presents a fast and robust sprite generation algorithm for MPEG-4 video coding. Our contributions consist of two aspects. Firstly, a fast and robust Global Motion Estimation (GME) algorithm is proposed here. Spatial and temporal feature point selection schemes are incorporated into the hierarchical GME in order to speed up it. Experimental results demonstrate our method is up to seve...
